Chasing a target of 174 runs set by West Indies, Uganda’s innings came to a quick end as they were bundled out for a mere 39 runs in just 12 overs, marking the joint-lowest team total in the men’s T20 World Cup, equalling the Netherlands’ score against Sri Lanka in 2014.
The match was marked by a standout performance from West Indies’ left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein, who delivered a sensational spell, claiming five wickets for only 11 runs in four overs. Hosein’s remarkable performance, the first five-wicket haul by a West Indies bowler in a men’s T20 World Cup innings, earned him the prestigious Player of the Match award. Speaking after the match, Hosein expressed his satisfaction with his performance, emphasizing the importance of hard work and strategic planning in achieving success.
Hosein made history as the first West Indies bowler to secure a five-wicket haul in a men’s T20 World Cup innings. Alongside Hosein, Alzarri Joseph also made significant contributions, taking two wickets for just six runs in his three overs.
Uganda’s innings saw only one Player, Juma Miyagi, reaching a double-figure score with an unbeaten 13 runs off 20 balls. In contrast, West Indies put up a strong batting display after winning the toss and electing to bat first, posting a formidable total of 173-5 in their allotted 20 overs. Johnson Charles emerged as the top scorer for West Indies with 44 runs off 42 balls, supported by a quickfire 30 runs in 17 balls from Andre Russell.
West Indies’ victory over Uganda, their second win in the T20 World Cup, was a testament to their strength. This win followed their earlier triumph against Papua New Guinea (PNG). Conversely, Uganda’s spirited performance in their previous match against PNG saw them secure their first-ever T20 World Cup win after facing a defeat against Afghanistan, a commendable effort in the face of tough competition.
