Punjab Government Bans Public Gatherings, Tightens Security Ahead of PTI’s Protest

[post-views]

The Punjab government has enforced Section 144 across the province, banning all public gatherings, protests, rallies, processions, and sit-ins for three days, from Saturday, November 23, to Monday, November 25. This decision, made on the advice of the Cabinet Committee on Law and Order, is aimed at preventing disruptions ahead of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) protest scheduled for November 24. PTI, led by imprisoned founder Imran Khan, is rallying against alleged election rigging, the detention of party members, and the controversial 26th Constitutional Amendment, calling the protest a “do-or-die” event.

To maintain order, the Punjab government has stationed Rangers in key districts such as Rawalpindi, Attock, and Jhelum. Extra Rangers have been requested from the Ministry of Interior and deployed starting November 22. Islamabad has also imposed Section 144 for two months, restricting gatherings of more than five people, and has prepared for the protest by sealing off parts of the city with shipping containers. Over 10,700 police officers are on standby across Punjab, including specialized units with anti-riot gear.

In Islamabad, the city is under heavy security, with Rangers and Frontier Corps units already in place. The federal capital’s administration has requested additional police reinforcements, and authorities have warned that strict action will be taken against anyone attempting to disturb public order. Arrest lists have been compiled for individuals seen as likely to incite violence. The Islamabad High Court has called for any protest to remain lawful while encouraging dialogue with PTI leaders to avoid clashes.
