The World Bank is expected to approve the “Second Karachi Water and Sewerage Services Improvement Project (KWSSIP-2)” worth $240 million this Thursday. The project aims to improve water and sanitation services in Karachi and enhance the operational and financial performance of the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC).
The project consists of three main components:
- Capacity Building and Reform of KWSC – This component focuses on strengthening KWSC’s operations, making it more efficient and resilient to climate change. It includes training, technical assistance, organizational reforms, and improvements to water safety and quality monitoring systems.
- Safely Managed Water Supply and Sanitation Services – This will fund infrastructure upgrades to improve water supply and sanitation in Karachi, including expanding services to underserved areas like Katchi Abadis, upgrading sewerage networks, and reducing water losses.
- Project Management and Studies – This component covers the management of the project, including coordination, monitoring, and preparation of future water and sanitation projects.
Additionally, a fourth component, the Contingent Emergency Response Component (CERC), allows funds to be redirected for emergency response if needed.
The project’s goal is to address the city’s key water and sanitation challenges, improve service delivery, and help manage the financial and operational performance of KWSC.
