Fresh from acquiring a controlling 75 percent stake in Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) for Rs 135 billion ($482 million), prominent industrialist Arif Habib has turned his attention to Pakistan’s underdeveloped blue economy and the National Shipping Corporation (PNSC). Speaking at Naya Nazimabad Gymkhana, the 73-year-old businessman revealed that PNSC has invited him to discuss the corporation’s future, signalling plans to tap the country’s maritime potential, currently contributing less than 0.5 percent to GDP despite an estimated value of over $100 billion.
Habib also outlined his roadmap for PIA, aiming to make all 34 aircraft operational by September 2026. Currently, only 17 are in service. His consortium, which includes Fauji Fertilizer, Fatima Fertilizer, and other corporate players, will inject Rs 125 billion into the airline for fleet expansion, maintenance, and operations.
PIA’s turnaround plan focuses on competitive fares, service quality, cargo improvement, and merit-based hiring, while maintaining strict safety and operational standards.
Habib emphasised that the airline’s revival could serve as a benchmark for broader economic reforms in Pakistan. The PNSC and blue economy initiatives further reflect his vision of leveraging strategic sectors to boost national revenue and modernise Pakistan’s maritime and aviation industries.
