President Joe Biden’s administration has appointed Dilawar Syed, a prominent Pakistani-American entrepreneur, to serve as the deputy administrator for the US Small Business Administration (SBA), defying strong opposition from Republicans.

In a move hailed by supporters, Syed was handpicked by President Biden in January and secured confirmation through a Senate vote of 54-42 on Thursday, with five Republicans joining in favor. He now holds the distinction of being the highest-ranking Muslim official within the US government.

The announcement of this significant development came from Senator Ben Cardin, chair of the Senate Committee on Small Business and Entrepreneurship, as reported on the Senate’s official website.

Speaking on Syed’s qualifications for the role, Senator Cardin released a statement highlighting the positive impact of this appointment: “Mr. Syed’s confirmation will be a boon to small businesses across the nation. The vacancy has hindered small business owners throughout our country, impeding their access to capital, contracting opportunities, and entrepreneurial development training that the SBA provides when fully staffed.”
