Defense Minister Khawaja Asif expressed disappointment with Maulana Fazlur Rehman for not backing the government’s proposed changes to the constitution. He mentioned to reporters outside the Parliament House that the uncertainty about securing the necessary votes for the amendments would become clear by Monday morning.

Asif raised concerns about the possibility of not gathering enough votes, stating, “It seems that we do not have the numbers.” He had been present in the National Assembly throughout the morning and although he couldn’t confirm the exact numbers, it seemed that they were lacking the required support, leading to a holdup in the legislation’s progress.

Earlier, Asif clarified that the news about Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa’s term extension was false. He emphasized that whatever was happening was for the greater good and hoped that Maulana Fazlur Rehman would support the government with his vote.

The Senate and National Assembly sessions, which were called to discuss the crucial constitutional amendments, have now been postponed until 12:30 pm on Monday.

It’s important to note that the government had sought Rehman’s support for the constitutional amendments through various meetings. President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, as well as Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Law Minister Azam Nazeer Tarar, and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, all met with Rehman to request his cooperation.
