In a recent meeting focused on prison reforms in Lahore, Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Yahya Afridi, stressed the importance of a humane and effective prison system for a just legal framework. He voiced serious concerns about the alarming levels of overcrowding in the nation’s prisons.
Currently, the total prison capacity is 66,625, but there are over 108,000 inmates. In Punjab alone, the capacity is 36,365, yet there are 67,837 prisoners, including 36,128 who are still awaiting trial. Justice Afridi emphasized the necessity for immediate action to tackle these pressing issues and noted that this meeting marks the first step towards meaningful reform in the prison system.
