Ex-ISI Chief Faiz Hameed Challenges Military Court Sentence

[post-views]

Former Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) chief Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed has formally challenged the 14-year prison sentence awarded to him by a military court, his lawyer confirmed on Monday. His legal team has also sought a copy of the detailed judgment to examine the grounds on which the conviction was based.

Advocate Mian Ali Ashfaq said the appeal was submitted to the army chief two days ago, while a separate request was filed with the registrar of the Court of Appeal at General Headquarters. He declined to disclose the arguments raised in the appeal. Under the Pakistan Army Act, Hameed has 40 days from the date of conviction to seek a review of the verdict.

Hameed was convicted on December 11 by a Field General Court Martial on four charges, including involvement in political activities, violating the Official Secrets Act, misuse of authority and government resources, and causing wrongful losses to individuals. He is currently being held at Special Prison Rawalpindi.

The case stems from a 2017 complaint by a property developer, revived after Supreme Court directions in 2023. Following a military inquiry, Hameed was arrested in August 2024. The proceedings lasted over a year, culminating in his conviction, marking a rare moment in Pakistan’s military history.
