Meta Platforms Inc, the parent company of Facebook, announced on Friday that it is examining the possibility of a decentralized social network designed for text updates.

The report stated that Meta’s new content application would be compatible with Activity-pub, the decentralized social networking protocol utilized by the Twitter competitor, Mastodon.

In a statement emailed to Reuters, a Meta spokesperson confirmed the company’s plans, stating, “We are looking into the development of a standalone decentralized social network for text updates. We believe that there is an opportunity to create a distinct platform where creators and public figures can provide prompt updates on their interests.”

If Meta proceeds with the creation of a decentralized social network, it could potentially allow for greater user privacy and control over personal data, in contrast to the centralized models of social networking that currently exist.
