Today, during a meeting in Islamabad chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, the Federal Cabinet gave the green light to recommendations proposed by the Rightsizing of the Federal Government Committee for merging and dissolving 82 State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs). Additionally, a committee has been established to safeguard the interests of employees affected by these changes.

The transformation of these 82 entities aims to turn them into strong institutions through digitization, efficient governance, transparent processes, smart management, and prompt execution to enhance services for the general public. The implementation of the committee’s recommendations has already commenced in six ministries in the first phase.

These actions are anticipated to enhance government performance, optimize the utilization of human resources, improve policymaking, and eliminate unnecessary delays in decision implementation.

An update provided during the meeting revealed that around $130 million in savings has been achieved by halting urea imports and ensuring uninterrupted gas supply to urea factories. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif commended the Ministries of Finance, Energy, and National Food Security for their arrangements to guarantee an undisrupted supply of urea fertilizer during the upcoming Rabi crop season.

The Cabinet also received a comprehensive briefing on the enforcement of austerity measures in alignment with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s vision to curtail government expenditure. The continuation of these measures, including voluntary salary waivers by cabinet members, restrictions on buying non-essential government vehicles, prohibition on acquiring new equipment and machinery, and limitations on unnecessary international travel at government expense, was approved by the Federal Cabinet.

Acknowledging the implementation of austerity measures by federal ministries, the Prime Minister urged them to maintain the same level of commitment. Moreover, the Federal Cabinet unequivocally condemned the acts of terrorism in Balochistan and the cowardly assaults by terrorists on innocent civilians. A tribute was offered to the martyred civilians and security personnel, and the Cabinet stressed the importance of taking rigorous action against the terrorist elements involved in these incidents.
