Greenland’s Prime Minister has affirmed the territory’s commitment to Denmark, declaring “we choose Denmark” at a joint press conference with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. The show of unity comes ahead of high-stakes talks in Washington over US President Donald Trump’s reported interest in acquiring Greenland.
The situation escalated as US Vice-President JD Vance is set to host a surprise meeting with the foreign ministers of Greenland and Denmark, alongside US Secretary of State, on Wednesday. The unexpected involvement of the vice-president signals the growing importance of the Arctic discussions for Washington.
The remarks followed a day of intense diplomatic activity. Denmark’s parliamentary foreign affairs committee convened to debate US interest in Greenland, while further discussions are planned with Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Greenland’s ministers for business and mineral resources told UK lawmakers that US rhetoric regarding the territory has been “offensive” and “bewildering,” creating anxiety among the local population. They expressed hope that the upcoming talks in the US would provide “more clarity” on Washington’s intentions, especially regarding the Arctic’s strategic and economic significance.
The joint statements from Greenland and Denmark underline a clear stance of unity as Arctic geopolitics draw international attention.
