Hawaiian Electric Faces Lawsuit for Keeping Power Lines Active During Deadly Fire

[post-views]

Maui County is taking legal action against Hawaii’s electric utility company, holding them responsible for the devastating Lahaina fire that claimed numerous lives. The lawsuit alleges that the fire could have been prevented if the power lines had been deactivated.

This legal action represents an escalating focus on the power provider following the tragic fire, which resulted in a significant loss of life. Video evidence appears to show fallen power cables igniting vegetation in the hours leading up to the disaster.

According to the lawsuit, there were early warnings about strong winds due to an approaching hurricane. Despite this, Hawaiian Electric and its subsidiaries allegedly failed to take adequate precautions to shut down the power lines.

The lawsuit contends that these power lines were a foreseeable ignition source for the fast-moving and destructive Lahaina Fire. This devastating blaze completely razed homes, businesses, places of worship, schools, and historically significant cultural sites.

The lawsuit, filed on Thursday, asserts that the defendants were aware of the National Weather Service’s predictions regarding the high winds that posed a risk of toppling power poles, bringing down power lines, and sparking vegetation fires.
