The International Court of Justice (ICJ) has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories. The court has declared that Israel must terminate its occupation ‘as swiftly as possible’ and provide full reparations for its ‘internationally wrongful acts.’ This extensive advisory opinion, which found Israel’s occupation to be in breach of international law and tantamount to apartheid, carries significant weight. The court has also advised other states against recognizing the occupation as lawful and against providing any form of assistance. Furthermore, the ICJ has detailed numerous breaches of international law by Israel, including forcible evictions, settlement activities, restrictions on Palestinian movement, and limitations on access to water.

The opinion, issued in response to a request from the UN General Assembly in 2022, precedes the Gaza conflict and adds pressure on Israel to end its military offensive. This historic decision, which has been contested by Israel’s allies, has been welcomed by the office of the Palestinian president as a victory for justice. The president’s office emphasizes the historical nature of the court’s decision and the need for Israel to be compelled to implement it.
