Jumbo delivery: Sri Lanka to send pair of female elephants as gift to Pakistan

In the wake of the unfortunate passing of Noor Jehan, the African elephant at Karachi Zoo, Sri Lanka has announced its intention to donate a pair of elephants to Pakistan. The Honorary Consul General of Sri Lanka, Yasin Joyia, confirmed to Geo News on Sunday that a request for the elephants had been made to the Sri Lankan High Commissioner. However, it is worth noting that the high court in Sri Lanka had previously issued a ruling prohibiting the export of elephants.

In a conversation with Republic Policy News the day before, Joyia stated that Sri Lanka will be providing two female elephants to Pakistan, with one intended for Karachi Zoo and the other for Lahore.

Joyia expressed his sorrow over the demise of Suzi, the only large mammal in Lahore Zoo, who died in May 2017. Lahore Zoo has been without an elephant since Suzi’s death.

Joyia also expressed his grief over the passing of Noor Jehan in Karachi, who died due to prolonged health issues exacerbated by a lack of care at the zoo.
