Livestock Export Opportunities

Editorial

The government is considering lifting the 15-year ban on the export of sheep and goats to capitalize on high demand for the animals in the Middle East. Supporters of the ban argue that it is necessary to keep domestic prices stable, especially during peak demand around Eid. On the other hand, proponents of exports believe that setting up fattening farms, which are farms where animals are fed to increase their weight and improve their quality for market, domestically could increase the profitability of exported goats. Additionally, the government is urged to explore ways to encourage meat exports without adversely affecting domestic markets.

The Ministry of National Food Security and Research has outlined that allowing exports could help curb smuggling and stabilize domestic prices, as the domestic supply and demand situation has significantly improved. The State Bank of Pakistan has also approved the reopening of exports, emphasizing the promising potential for beef exports, particularly in light of concerns over India’s limitations on ‘beef’ exports. This could open up new avenues for the livestock industry.

Furthermore, it is important to recognize that the livestock industry accounts for a substantial portion of the agriculture sector and overall GDP, with a significant impact on rural poverty. Therefore, a well-planned and balanced strategy is crucial to support the growth of poorer farmers without allowing industrial farms to dominate the sector. This balanced approach will ensure the benefits of the livestock industry are distributed equitably.
