The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) has revealed the victors of its competition to create designs for the upcoming banknote series. This initiative for the design and issuance of new banknotes of all existing denominations was launched in January 2024. In March, an art competition was introduced to gather innovative and thematic design concepts for the new currency notes. The SBP emphasized that there are no plans to introduce polymer banknotes at this time.

The competition’s top prize was awarded to Dr. Shery Abidi, Haroon Khan, Syed Fawad Hussain, Memoona Afzal, Hadiya Hassan, and Noureen Aslam. Additionally, Mirza Sufiyan, Aynee Zahra, and Karim Muhammad were named winners of the second prize. The SBP declared earlier that the first, second, and third designs for each denomination would receive prizes of Rs1,000,000, Rs500,000, and Rs300,000, respectively.

The selected designs are described as suggestive and have been shared with international designers who have been shortlisted to collaborate with the SBP in finalizing the designs for the new banknote series. While drawing inspiration from the local art submissions, the international designers will have the freedom to utilize their own design expertise and imagination to create the final designs for the new banknotes series, as mentioned by the SBP in their statement.
