Pakistan-Afghanistan Talks on Torkham Border Reopening Remain Inconclusive

KHYBER: Negotiations between Pakistan and Afghanistan over the reopening of the Torkham border ended without an agreement on Sunday, though both sides expressed optimism that the issue could be resolved within the week.

According to official sources at Torkham, border security officials from both countries met at Zero Point around midday, where they discussed their respective positions. Both parties emphasized the need to honor previous border protocols before making any changes to the existing structure.

Pakistan reportedly showed willingness to reopen the border, but Afghan officials requested additional time to consult with their higher authorities before making a final decision.

In anticipation of the reopening, customs and immigration departments had called their staff to duty on Sunday, but they were sent back as the negotiations remained inconclusive. Meanwhile, hundreds of returning Afghans gathered near the border, hoping to cross back into their country. Many waited impatiently throughout the day, but the border remained closed.

In a humanitarian effort, a local youth organization arranged Iftar meals for the stranded Afghans at Torkham and Landi Kotal. Officials are now waiting for Afghan authorities to return with a positive response regarding the reopening of the border.
