ISLAMABAD: Pakistan and China on Wednesday agreed to formalize closer cooperation on counterterrorism and internal security, pledging regular engagements and stronger coordination to protect Chinese citizens and projects amid ongoing militant threats in the region.
The understanding was reached during a meeting between Pakistan’s Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and China’s Minister of Public Security Wang Xiaohong at the Chinese Ministry of Public Security in Beijing, according to an official statement issued in Islamabad.
China has repeatedly expressed concern over attacks on its nationals working on infrastructure and energy initiatives in Pakistan. In response, Islamabad has enhanced security measures and intelligence sharing, while Beijing has sought more structured and predictable security collaboration.
According to Pakistan’s interior ministry, the two sides discussed joint counterterrorism efforts, police training exchanges, and expanded cooperation in areas of shared interest. They agreed to hold working-level meetings every three months and annual talks between interior ministers to ensure sustained engagement.
Wang welcomed Pakistan’s steps to safeguard Chinese citizens and projects, commending its counterterrorism actions and internal security initiatives. China also acknowledged Pakistan’s sacrifices in its long struggle against militancy.
Both ministers emphasized the need to further strengthen coordination mechanisms to improve operational cooperation between the security agencies of the two countries.
