PM Shehbaz Sharif Stands Firm Against US Sanctions, Prioritizes National Security

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has firmly rejected the rationale behind the recent US sanctions on Pakistan’s missile program, emphasizing that the country will not compromise on its defense capabilities. During a federal cabinet meeting, he reiterated that Pakistan’s nuclear program is solely for defensive purposes and is not intended for aggression.

Sharif criticized the sanctions imposed on the National Defense Complex and other Pakistani companies, stating that there is no valid reason for these actions. He highlighted that this missile program is not just a political matter but a crucial part of national identity for the 240 million citizens of Pakistan, and there is widespread unity on this issue.

Addressing the ongoing fight against terrorism, the Prime Minister noted the recent tragic loss of 17 Pakistani personnel in an attack, urging everyone to pray for their souls. He reported that eight of the attackers had been killed and that the army chief visited Wana to support the forces. He underscored that the nation must completely eradicate terrorism to fully enjoy the fruits of development and prosperity, pledging that resources will be dedicated to this battle in partnership with provincial governments.

He also recognized the differing terrorism situations in Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, expressing dismay over sectarian violence in Kurram while discussing the need for more focused governmental actions during such crises.

On the political front, Sharif spoke about recent developments, including a meeting with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party and the formation of a negotiation committee. He stressed that for the sake of national unity and development, personal interests must be set aside, and he remains hopeful that PTI will collaborate for the benefit of the country.

Last week, the United States imposed sanctions on four Pakistani entities over their alleged roles in Pakistan’s long-range missile program. The US government’s statement cited concerns about ongoing proliferation threats linked to Pakistan’s missile advancements. Pakistan responded by decrying these sanctions as “unfortunate and biased,” pushing back against the allegations and questioning US double standards.
