Political Instability and Institutional Clash in Pakistan: A Looming Crisis

Editorial

The ongoing cycle of political instability in Pakistan has intensified, with concerns about the current government’s future led by the PTI founder Imran Khan. Predictions about the government’s potential downfall have sparked speculations and added to the already heightened tensions between the executive and the judiciary, potentially leading to a constitutional crisis.

Amidst these developments, criticism from the PML-N government and PPP’s chairman, Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, has further fueled the debate on judicial interference and potential constitutional crises. Observers have long warned about an imminent clash between institutions, and recent events, including the government’s controversial actions regarding amendments to the Election Act 2017, which some fear could undermine the democratic process, have only added to these concerns.

While an independent judiciary is vital for upholding democratic principles, there are fears that judicial overreach or executive disregard for court decisions could undermine the delicate balance of powers. It is imperative for the political leadership to unite, prioritize national interests over partisan gains, and work towards resolving issues with the judiciary to prevent a prolonged institutional conflict that could exacerbate the country’s existing challenges.

Checks and balances among the legislature, executive, and judiciary are critical for good governance because they prevent the concentration of power in any one branch of government, ensuring that no branch becomes too powerful. This system helps to safeguard against potential abuses of power, ensures that laws are constitutional, and promotes accountability and transparency within the government. Additionally, it encourages collaboration and compromise among different branches, leading to more balanced decision-making and better representation of the people’s interests. These checks and balances ultimately contribute to a more stable, fair, and democratic government.

Therefore, all stakeholders must stick to the constitution and play a positive role in developing and executing the system. Pakistan needs to move forward.
