The Punjab government has announced that schools across most of the province will reopen from November 19, following an improvement in air quality. However, schools in Lahore and Multan divisions will remain closed for now due to ongoing smog concerns.
This comes after the government shut down educational institutions in 18 districts from November 7 to 17 because of hazardous air conditions. Last month, the smog was officially declared a “calamity” in the region.
The air quality has improved recently, thanks to rain in northern Punjab and a shift in wind patterns. As a result, the provincial Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a notification allowing schools to reopen, with safety measures in place, such as mandatory face masks for students and staff. Schools must also adjust their schedules to avoid traffic congestion, and outdoor sports and extracurricular activities will be banned until further notice.
In Rawalpindi Division, which includes Rawalpindi, Attock, Jhelum, and Chakwal, schools will also reopen with immediate effect.
Despite the improvement, the EPA has issued a smog alert for Lahore, where the Air Quality Index (AQI) remains at a harmful level of 253. Authorities recommend wearing N-95 masks, avoiding outdoor activities, and ensuring vehicles meet environmental standards to help reduce further pollution.
