Hasan Nawaz, the son of former Prime Minister and PML-N President Nawaz Sharif, has been officially declared bankrupt by the London High Court. The ruling stems from a tax case involving the UK’s Tax and Revenue Department. The decision was recorded in the official UK Gazette, the country’s formal journal of record, and it relates to a civil case filed by Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

The London High Court issued the ruling under case number 694 of 2023, which was made public on April 29, 2024. The case itself was initiated on August 25, 2023. Sources close to Hasan Nawaz have indicated that his legal team is currently reviewing the case and plans to respond to the court’s decision in the near future. Hasan Nawaz is being represented in the matter by legal representative Kaur Maxwell.

Legal expert Barrister Gul Nawaz Khan explained the bankruptcy process. He said that when an individual fails to pay their dues, the government steps in, and if an agreement cannot be reached, the case is taken to court. He further elaborated on the consequences of bankruptcy, stating that individuals declared bankrupt are prohibited from serving as company directors and face significant difficulties in obtaining loans in the future.

As a result of the ruling, Hasan Nawaz is now ineligible to serve as a director of any company. This legal development comes just a day after Nawaz Sharif, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, and others returned to Pakistan. Nawaz Sharif had arrived in the UK on October 26, then traveled to the US shortly after, while his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, returned to London with him on November 12 after a visit to Europe.
