The Supreme Court of Pakistan has declared the Lahore High Court’s decision to form six election tribunals as “null and void”. The unanimous 5-0 verdict, announced by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faez Isa, addressed the ongoing dispute between the LHC and the ECP over the authority to constitute election tribunals. The apex court emphasized the need for meaningful consultation between the LHC chief justice and the chief election commissioner. As a result, the high court’s decision was overturned, and the notification issued on June 12, 2024, was set aside. This decision brings an end to the prolonged saga surrounding the formation of election tribunals, which had been a point of contention since February.
