TEHRAN: Iran held a state funeral for around 60 people, including senior military commanders, who were killed during its recent conflict with Israel. The ceremony took place in Tehran amid nationwide mourning, with government offices and many businesses closed for the occasion.
State media described the event as an official tribute to the “martyrs,” showing crowds dressed in black, waving Iranian flags, and holding photos of the deceased commanders. Coffins wrapped in Iranian flags and adorned with portraits were displayed near Enghelab Square in central Tehran.
President Masoud Pezeshkian and other senior government officials were present at the ceremony.
The funeral followed U.S. airstrikes on three Iranian nuclear sites, carried out in coordination with Israeli bombardments during the 12-day war that began on June 13. Both Iran and Israel claimed victory after the conflict ended with a ceasefire.
Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei dismissed the U.S. strikes as insignificant. In response, U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at Tehran on his Truth Social platform, criticizing Iran’s claim of victory and calling out Khamenei in remarks that Iran’s foreign minister condemned as “unacceptable.”
