The Prince is a famous political treatise by Niccolo Machiavelli, written in 1513 and first published in 1532. It is considered one of history’s most influential works of political philosophy and realism. In this article, I will critically evaluate the book regarding power, glory, governance, and rule based on literary criticism.
Machiavelli defines power as the ability to maintain and expand one’s state, regardless of the means. He argues that a prince must be willing to use both force and fraud, as well as virtue and vice, to achieve his goals. He also advises the Prince to be flexible and adaptable to changing circumstances and to avoid being constrained by moral or religious principles. Machiavelli’s conception of power is pragmatic, ruthless, and amoral but also realistic and practical. He does not judge power by its moral value but by its results.
Machiavelli considers glory as the ultimate aim of a prince and the best way to secure his legacy. He defines glory as the reputation and fame a prince acquires through his achievements and deeds. He suggests that a prince should seek glory by undertaking great projects, such as wars, conquests, reforms, or patronage of arts and sciences. He also warns that a prince should avoid being hated or despised by his subjects or enemies, as this would endanger his power and glory. Machiavelli’s notion of glory is ambitious, ambitious, and self-aggrandizing but also inspiring and motivating. He does not value glory for its intrinsic value but for its instrumental benefits.
Machiavelli discusses governance as the art of ruling and managing a state and the skills and qualities a prince must possess. He advises the Prince to be well-versed in military affairs, as war is the most critical aspect of governance. He also recommends the Prince to be prudent, wise, cunning, and decisive in his actions and policies. He counsels the Prince to balance his interests with his subjects’ and maintain their goodwill and loyalty. He also cautions the Prince to avoid being corrupted or influenced by flatterers or sycophants. Machiavelli’s view of governance is practical, analytical, and strategic but also cynical and opportunistic. He does not regard governance as a duty or a service but as a means to an end.

He also proposes how to reform or improve one’s rule and how to restore Italy’s unity and independence from foreign domination. Machiavelli’s perspective on rule is historical, comparative, and empirical, but also prescriptive and normative. He does not describe the rule as it is but as it should be.
Finally, The Prince is a remarkable book offering a comprehensive and original analysis of power, glory, governance, and political rule. It is based on Machiavelli’s extensive knowledge of history and his own experience as a statesman. It is also influenced by his personal views and values, which are often controversial and provocative. The book has been widely read and debated by scholars and leaders throughout history, and it remains relevant and influential today. Accordingly, the book presents the universality of power and its allied attributes. The power games and dynamics have been the same since political power existed. The book is a good critique for the political workers, politicians and scientists as it presents a practically ruthless concept of power.
