World Habitat Day is a momentous occasion to reflect on the state of our habitats and the fundamental right of all to adequate shelter. It is also an opportunity to remind the world that we all have the power and the responsibility to shape the future of our cities and towns. World Habitat Day raises awareness and mobilizes action on the challenges and opportunities of urbanization, one of the most transformative trends of the 21st century. According to the United Nations, more than half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, and this proportion is expected to increase to 68% by 2050. Urbanization can bring many benefits, such as economic growth, social development, and cultural diversity. However, it can also pose many risks, such as environmental degradation, social inequality, and poor governance. World Habitat Day provides a platform for stakeholders from different sectors and levels to exchange knowledge, experiences, and best practices on how to make urbanization sustainable, inclusive, and resilient.
World Habitat Day promotes the implementation and monitoring of the global frameworks and agendas that guide urban development, such as the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the New Urban Agenda, and the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. These frameworks and agendas recognize that urbanization is a key driver for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), especially SDG 11: Make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable. World Habitat Day encourages governments, civil society, the private sector, and other partners to align their policies, plans, and actions with these global commitments and to report on their progress and challenges.
