Trump Confirms Fresh Iran Talks, Declares June Ceasefire Has Ended

[post-views]

Washington: US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that Washington has agreed to resume negotiations with Iran after Tehran requested the continuation of diplomatic talks, while making it clear that the ceasefire reached between the two countries in June is no longer in effect.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump said Iran had approached the United States to continue discussions and that Washington had accepted the request. However, he emphasized that the US had informed Tehran unequivocally that the previous ceasefire arrangement had officially ended.

The announcement follows a fresh exchange of military strikes between the two countries earlier this week. Iranian armed forces launched attacks on US military installations in several Gulf states on Thursday, describing the operation as retaliation for American strikes targeting Iran’s southern coastal and eastern provinces.

An Iranian security official also warned that Tehran would respond against Israel if further attacks were carried out against Iranian infrastructure, signalling that regional tensions remain elevated despite renewed diplomatic engagement.

The United States and Iran had reached an interim agreement last month to halt a four-month conflict that severely disrupted global energy markets and raised concerns over international oil supplies.

Despite the temporary truce, fighting resumed this week, underscoring the fragile nature of the agreement. The renewed hostilities have complicated President Trump’s efforts to bring the conflict to a lasting conclusion.

The continuing instability has also created political challenges for Trump ahead of this year’s congressional midterm elections, as rising fuel prices and public dissatisfaction remain key issues facing his administration.
