ISLAMABAD: On Friday, the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) was briefed on the ongoing security threats in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) due to the presence of Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in the province, as per sources.
The ECP headquarters in Islamabad hosted a meeting chaired by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Sikandar Sultan Raja, during which security agency heads presented an overview of the latest law and order situation in Punjab and KP.
The Election Commission called for the meeting to discuss the preparations for the upcoming polls in the two provinces, following the Supreme Court’s directive. Sources reported officials stating, “There are many security concerns in KP as the TTP is highly active in the province at the moment.”
The ECP later released a brief statement confirming that the meeting was aimed at ensuring peaceful polls. The Commission is meeting with stakeholders to comply with the Supreme Court’s orders to conduct polls within 90 days of the dissolution of assemblies.
While elections in Punjab are scheduled for April 30, the date for KP polls has yet to be confirmed. The dissolution of both houses was ordered by Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan in mid-January to push the government for snap elections.
