Ukraine is gearing up to shake things up in their defense department by swapping out Defense Minister Oleksii Reznikov for the head honcho of their military spy agency. According to David Arakhamia, a top lawmaker and the leader of the Servant of the People parliamentary group, Reznikov will take on a new ministerial role and be replaced by Kyrylo Budanov, the current head of the GUR military intelligence agency.
Arakhamia stated that “war dictates changes in personnel policy” and emphasized that during times of conflict, agencies such as the defense ministry shouldn’t be led by politicians but rather, individuals with a defense or security background.
Reznikov, who had earlier stated that any decision on a reshuffle was ultimately up to President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, expressed surprise at the news of his transfer to the strategic industries ministry.
This reshuffle marks the most notable change in the government’s personnel following a corruption scandal and Zelenskiy’s commitment to bringing Ukraine up to Western standards of clean governance. Arakhamia added that it’s high time for Ukraine to revamp their “force” agencies.
