Unlocking Balochistan’s Renewable Energy Potential: A Game-Changer for Pakistan

Print Friendly, PDF & Email

The World Bank’s latest report, “Balochistan Renewable Energy Development Study,” reveals the urgent need to tap into the immense renewable energy potential in Balochistan. This untapped resource has the power to electrify the province, aiding Pakistan in achieving its 30 percent VRE target and substantial reduction in annual energy losses by 2028. Furthermore, it could play a significant role in minimizing the circular debt while reducing the country’s reliance on water availability for hydropower generation.

The report highlights Balochistan’s solar and wind power potential, with the region emerging as one of the most resource-rich areas globally for photovoltaic (PV) power. The study underlines the opportunities in Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and emphasizes the vast potential of wind power generation in remote areas. Additionally, it identifies significant short-term VRE potential at 28 sites and the potential for distributed PV to solarize grid-connected tube wells.

To realize this potential, the report stresses the need for proactive governmental involvement and clear targets at both provincial and federal levels. Equally important is the engagement of local communities, as their support and participation are crucial for the success of renewable energy projects in Balochistan. The transformative impact of renewable energy in Balochistan cannot be overstated, offering a sustainable and cost-effective solution to reshape the future of Pakistan’s energy landscape.
