The United States Ambassador to South Africa, Reuben Brigety, has issued an extensive apology to the country for his unfounded allegation that South Africa was involved in arms sales to Russia. Brigety made the claim on Thursday, asserting that a Russian vessel was loaded with ammunition and weapons in Cape Town in December. However, South Africa denied any knowledge of such a transaction and initiated an inquiry into the matter.

After a meeting with the South African foreign ministry, Brigety expressed gratitude for the opportunity to clear up any misunderstandings arising from his public statements. He emphasized the strong partnership between the United States and South Africa, reiterating the important agenda set by their respective presidents. The White House national security spokesman acknowledged the gravity of the situation but did not provide specific details regarding the allegations.

In response to the allegations, a South African cabinet minister criticized what she called “megaphone diplomacy” and emphasized that South Africa should not be coerced by the United States, especially considering that it is the US that has imposed sanctions on Russia.
