Border Clashes Escalate Between Azerbaijan and Armenia

A deadly border clash erupted between Azerbaijan and Armenia, with one Armenian soldier killed in the second day of fighting that could derail EU-mediated peace talks scheduled for the weekend.

The two nations have been locked in a territorial dispute for decades, specifically over the Nagorno-Karabakh region that is populated by Armenians, and have previously fought two wars over the issue. The Armenian defence ministry confirmed the death of one soldier and injuries to two others.

It also reported that Azerbaijani Armed Forces violated the ceasefire using UAVs and heavy weapons near the village of Kut in the Gegharkunik province. Meanwhile, Azerbaijan’s defence ministry claimed that Armenian forces opened fire from trench mortars on their positions at the border.
