Human rights are critical for a country. The constitution of Pakistan provides the fundamental rights to the citizens of Pakistan. Instead, article 8 of the constitution of Pakistan ensures that there will be no law repugnant to the constitution’s fundamental rights. Hence, fundamental rights protected in Pakistan’s constitution are the land’s supreme law. However, Pakistan is a country that faces many challenges and violations of human rights, such as violence against women, children, marginalized groups and minorities, attacks on journalists and civil society groups, torture and extrajudicial killings, and the misuse of sedition and other laws to stifle dissent. Some of these issues are rooted in the political and economic instability of the country, as well as the influence of many powerful groups. The marginalized groups in Pakistan face multiple challenges to fundamental rights.

However, Pakistan also has some positive developments and opportunities to improve its human rights situation. For example, Pakistan has ratified several international human rights treaties, such as the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. Pakistan also has a Ministry of Human Rights and a Human Rights Commission of Pakistan that are responsible for promoting and protecting human rights in the country at the federal level. Then, human rights is a devolved subject, and there are provincial departments also working for the cause of fundamental rights in Pakistan. Additionally, Pakistan has a vibrant civil society sector that advocates for various human rights causes, such as women’s empowerment, minority rights, environmental justice, and democratic reforms.

Apart from personal human rights and liberties, social and political rights are equally important for the people in Pakistan. Therefore, human rights are very significant in a country like Pakistan, as they reflect the aspirations and struggles of its people for dignity, equality, and justice. Human rights also provide a framework and standard for evaluating the government’s and other actors’ performance and accountability. Human rights can inspire positive change and reform in various aspects of Pakistani society.
