On Friday, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif emphasized that one of the main goals of terrorists is to prevent Pakistan from capitalizing on its vast natural resources. Speaking at the “Rab-e-Zuljalal ka Ehsaan – Pakistan” ceremony in Islamabad, he stated, “Pakistan is blessed with trillions of dollars worth of natural resources, but foreign elements supporting terrorists do not want Pakistan to benefit from these mineral riches.”

The Prime Minister’s remarks come as the country faces an escalating wave of terrorist attacks, particularly in the border regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, following the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021. Terrorist activity surged dramatically in January 2025, with a 42% increase in attacks compared to the previous month, according to data from the Pakistan Institute for Conflict and Security Studies (PICSS).

In his speech, PM Shehbaz expressed solidarity with Pakistan’s security forces, who are risking their lives in the ongoing fight against terrorism. He stressed the importance of unity in overcoming the threat, saying, “The future generations will not forgive us if we fail to unite in this fight.” He called on religious leaders (ulema) to play a key role in promoting unity and encouraging the public to rise above sectarian differences for the greater good of the nation.

The Prime Minister also highlighted the significant economic potential of Pakistan’s natural resources, asserting that these could help the country settle its debts and restore its global standing. He urged the people of Pakistan to unite in addressing the nation’s economic and social challenges and to combat terrorism.

PM Shehbaz reminded the audience of Pakistan’s historic achievements, citing the country’s nuclear capabilities as a testament to its resilience and strength in the face of global opposition. He also praised the vision of Quaid-e-Azam, who advocated for a Pakistan where both Muslims and minorities enjoy religious freedom.

Reflecting on the holy month of Ramadan, the Prime Minister encouraged the nation to follow the teachings of the Holy Quran and Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to achieve the country’s rightful place in the world. He reaffirmed the importance of economic progress in ensuring political independence and pledged to make resources available to equip the youth with modern skills and technology through initiatives like the PM Youth Programme.

PM Shehbaz also called on the ulema to promote positive thinking, research, and unity, emphasizing the importance of fighting fake news and propaganda in shaping the future of Pakistan.
