The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has issued a heatwave alert, warning that temperatures are expected to rise sharply across the country starting Monday, April 13. This spike in heat is due to the formation of a high-pressure system in the upper atmosphere.

Southern regions — including Sindh, southern Punjab, and Balochistan — are expected to bear the brunt of the extreme weather, with daytime temperatures forecasted to soar 6 to 8°C above normal from April 13 to 18.

Northern and central areas — such as Islamabad, upper and central Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Azad Kashmir — won’t be spared either, with temperatures expected to climb 4 to 6°C higher than usual between April 14 and 18. Night-time temperatures across the country are also likely to remain unusually warm.

The PMD has also warned that the intense heat could trigger dust and wind storms, which may damage fragile infrastructure, including power lines, trees, vehicles, and solar panels.

Residents are urged to take precautions, especially vulnerable groups like children, the elderly, and women. People are advised to stay indoors during peak heat hours, avoid direct sun exposure, and stay hydrated.

Farmers, particularly those in the middle of wheat harvesting, are advised to adjust their schedules based on the forecast and ensure proper care for their livestock.

In the north, the rising temperatures could speed up snowmelt between April 14 and 18, raising the risk of flooding in certain areas.

Authorities across the country have been directed to stay on high alert and take all necessary steps to minimize the risks associated with the upcoming heatwave.
