U.S. President Donald Trump on Saturday strongly criticized the Israeli prosecutors handling Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s corruption trial. He argued that the United States, which provides billions of dollars in aid to Israel, should not tolerate what he called an unfair legal process.
Netanyahu was indicted in 2019 on charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, all of which he denies. His trial, involving three separate criminal cases, began in 2020.
Posting on Truth Social, Trump wrote that “it is INSANITY what the out-of-control prosecutors are doing to Bibi Netanyahu,” claiming the trial could hinder Netanyahu’s efforts to negotiate with Hamas and Iran.
In a follow-up post, Trump further defended Netanyahu and questioned Israel’s treatment of its prime minister while receiving substantial financial and military support from Washington. He stated that the United States spends billions of dollars annually to support Israel and that “we are not going to stand for this.”
Trump also claimed, without providing details, that Netanyahu is currently negotiating a deal with Hamas.
On Friday, Trump told reporters he believed a ceasefire was close.
Meanwhile, Netanyahu has requested a postponement of a court appearance related to his trial.
Hamas has indicated willingness to release remaining hostages in Gaza as part of a deal to end the war, though it refuses to disarm. Israel insists any final agreement requires Hamas to be disarmed and dismantled.
Efforts to resolve the Gaza conflict have intensified following U.S. and Israeli strikes on Iran’s nuclear facilities. A ceasefire between Israel and Iran went into effect earlier this week, ending 12 days of hostilities.
