Ex-PM Hasina Denies Charges of Crimes Against Humanity

[post-views]

Bangladesh’s former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, currently in exile in India, has denied charges of crimes against humanity, according to her state-appointed defence lawyer.

The charges stem from a deadly crackdown on protesters between July and August last year, in which the UN estimates up to 1,400 were killed. Hasina fled the country during a student-led uprising and has refused to return for her trial, which began in absentia on June 1.

Prosecutors accuse her of incitement, conspiracy, and failing to prevent mass killings, citing her alleged use of lethal force and efforts to maintain power. She is being tried alongside two former officials — one also a fugitive, the other in custody.

Hasina’s banned Awami League has called the case a “show trial” and reiterated her complete denial of all charges.
