U.S. President Donald Trump has announced a major trade agreement with Japan, calling it “perhaps the largest deal ever made.” Under the agreement, Japan will invest $550 billion in the United States, with the U.S. receiving 90% of the profits. In exchange, the U.S. will impose a 15% tariff on Japanese exports.

The deal also opens Japanese markets to American cars, rice, and other agricultural products, which Trump claims will generate hundreds of thousands of U.S. jobs. A joint U.S.-Japan venture will also explore liquefied natural gas development in Alaska.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent hailed the agreement as “historic,” marking a new chapter in U.S.-Japan cooperation. Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba responded cautiously, saying the government would closely examine the terms but believed the deal was in Japan’s national interest.

The announcement comes amid broader global trade tensions and follows new U.S. tariffs on countries including Iraq, Brazil, and the Philippines.
