Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is set to meet with U.S. President Donald Trump in Washington, D.C., on Monday to discuss ending Russia’s three-year-long war in Ukraine. This meeting comes shortly after Trump’s talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Alaska, which concluded without a concrete agreement. Trump, speaking on his Truth Social platform, emphasized that the path to peace should involve a Peace Agreement rather than a temporary ceasefire, which often fails to hold.

Putin referred to his discussions with Trump as “timely” and “very useful,” calling them an opportunity to clarify positions. While the talks were deemed successful in Russia, European and Ukrainian leaders welcomed the initiative but stressed the need for security guarantees for Ukraine. Zelenskyy, in a statement following the summit, emphasized that sanctions on Russia should be escalated if no progress is made in peace talks. He also highlighted the importance of a lasting peace and security guarantees involving both the U.S. and Europe.

Zelenskyy expressed readiness for a trilateral meeting with Trump and Putin to pursue a real peace agreement. However, Russian foreign affairs adviser Yuri Ushakov clarified that such a meeting had not been discussed in the U.S.-Russia talks. Trump, during an interview, noted that the pressure would be on Zelenskyy to finalize the peace process, though Europe would also play a role. Meanwhile, European leaders reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, stressing that Russia should not block Ukraine’s path to NATO and the EU.

Despite ongoing battlefield shifts, Zelenskyy and Ukrainian forces maintain their stance on not conceding territory in the Donetsk region. As Russia advances, particularly near the town of Pokrovsk, Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s defensive efforts, claiming success in tough areas of Donetsk. Meanwhile, reports from Russia’s Defense Ministry indicated continued territorial gains in Donetsk and the Dnipropetrovsk region, with Ukraine pushing Russian forces back in northern parts of the country.
