Although Wang Yi’s official statement did not name specific groups, Chinese state media outlet Xinhua reported that his discussions with Afghanistan’s acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi included concerns over the East Turkestan Islamic Movement (ETIM). Wang expressed hopes that Kabul would take stronger measures against such elements to ensure long-term regional peace.

China shares significant borders with both Pakistan and Afghanistan—596 km with Pakistan across the Karakoram Mountains and 92 km with Afghanistan near Gilgit-Baltistan. These frontiers link directly to China’s Xinjiang region, which has previously faced unrest tied to separatist movements and militant threats, with Beijing attributing instability to Islamist extremists and Uyghur separatist groups advocating for an independent East Turkestan.
