Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has once again rejected accusations that his country is committing genocide in Gaza, insisting that Israel does not deliberately target civilians. Addressing the United Nations, he dismissed allegations as “false” and “baseless,” claiming Israel is acting strictly in self-defence following the October 7, 2023 Hamas-led assault that killed 1,200 people and left more than 250 taken hostage.
“Take the false charge of genocide. Israel is accused of deliberately targeting civilians. Ladies and gentlemen, the opposite is true,” Netanyahu told the Assembly. He argued that comparing Israel’s military operations to genocide was a distortion of history. “What, did the Nazis ask the Jews to leave?” he asked, rejecting parallels between Israel’s actions and the Holocaust.

His remarks came just days after a United Nations Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel’s campaign in Gaza amounts to genocide. The report highlighted deliberate attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure, raising alarm across the international community.
Israel, however, dismissed the Commission’s findings as biased and rooted in unverified evidence. Officials maintain that military operations are designed to neutralize Hamas while minimizing civilian harm, though humanitarian groups continue to warn of the devastating impact on Gaza’s population.

The sharp divide between UN investigators and Israel underscores the deepening international rift over the Gaza conflict, with global pressure mounting for accountability even as Tel Aviv holds firm to its self-defence narrative.
