The brutal treatment allegedly faced by international activists, journalists, and lawyers detained by Israel after their attempt to breach the 16-year maritime blockade of Gaza has sparked a wave of global outrage. Reports from the Global Sumud Flotilla (GSF) participants describe severe abuse — including beatings, sleep deprivation, humiliation, and exposure to violence — while held at Ketziot Prison in the Negev desert. Israel’s government has denied all accusations as “brazen lies,” insisting that detainees’ rights were “fully upheld.”
Among those detained were Italian journalists, European parliamentarians, and the Swedish activist Greta Thunberg, who claimed she was forced to hold Israeli flags and kept in degrading conditions. Eyewitnesses alleged that prisoners were beaten with rifle butts, stripped of Palestinian symbols, and attacked by dogs. “When we asked for a doctor, we were told that was for humans,” said Ada Colau, former mayor of Barcelona, describing the jail as a “prison of a fascist state.”

Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, however, praised prison authorities, declaring he was “proud” of their conduct and warning activists against approaching Israel again. This dismissive stance has intensified criticism that Israel is undermining international humanitarian law. Even Greece, a close Israeli ally, issued a diplomatic protest after the reported mistreatment of its citizens.
The flotilla, carrying over 400 participants including doctors and lawyers, had sought to deliver humanitarian aid to Gaza. Yet, the episode has reignited debate over Israel’s prolonged blockade — and the moral legitimacy of silencing those who challenge it. As a new aid flotilla sails from Turkey, the world watches whether Israel will repeat its heavy-handed tactics or allow humanitarian law to prevail.
