Pakistan Raises Alarm Over India’s Indus Treaty Violation at UN

[post-views]

Pakistan has expressed grave concern at the United Nations Security Council over India’s unilateral suspension of the 1960 Indus Waters Treaty, terming it an alarming act that undermines international law and threatens regional stability. Speaking at the UN, Ambassador Asim Iftikhar said the move represents the “weaponisation of shared natural resources,” warning that it sets a dangerous precedent for coercion and environmental manipulation.

The ambassador reminded the Council that for over six decades, the treaty has ensured fair and predictable water sharing between Pakistan and India, even during times of war. He stressed that India’s decision violates the treaty’s provisions, disrupts cooperation, and endangers millions dependent on the Indus Basin for food and energy security.

Ambassador Asim urged New Delhi’s immediate return to compliance, noting that the 2025 Court of Arbitration ruling reaffirmed the treaty’s legal validity. He further called for integrating environmental safeguards into UN peace missions and ensuring new, grant-based climate finance for conflict-affected nations.
