Russia Claims Foiled Plot to Hijack MiG-31 Jet

[post-views]

Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) claimed on Tuesday to have prevented a joint Ukrainian-British plot to hijack a Russian MiG-31 fighter jet armed with a Kinzhal hypersonic missile. According to the FSB, the alleged plan aimed to use the aircraft in a “false flag” attack against NATO’s new airbase in Constanta, Romania, one of the alliance’s largest facilities in Southeastern Europe.

The agency said Ukrainian intelligence, with alleged British backing, had tried to persuade a Russian pilot to defect by offering $3 million and European citizenship. Russian state media showed purported messages and recordings of the individual involved.

An FSB official also accused British-based investigative group Bellingcat of acting as a cover or intermediary in the scheme—an allegation the group has previously denied in similar 2022 claims involving a Sukhoi Su-34.

Moscow’s statement comes as the information war between Russia, Ukraine, and Western powers intensifies, even as the battlefield remains locked in a slow-moving conflict across eastern Ukraine.
