Pakistan’s opposition alliance staged a sit-in outside Parliament House in Islamabad, demanding that jailed former prime minister Imran Khan be shifted to a private hospital for urgent treatment of his worsening eye condition. Police sealed parliament’s gates and blocked nearby roads, preventing protesters from gathering directly outside the building.
Opposition leaders said the protest would end if Khan was allowed an immediate medical check-up at Shifa Hospital. The demonstration followed a Supreme Court-appointed review of Khan’s health at Adiala jail, which highlighted concerns about his serious eye condition, including significant vision loss.
Government ministers rejected allegations of negligence, insisting Khan was receiving proper care under judicial supervision. They said the chief justice was personally monitoring the matter and assured there would be no delay in medical evaluation.
Khan, in custody since August 2023 over multiple cases he calls politically motivated, remains at the center of growing political tensions as debate over his health intensifies.
