Pakistan Reaffirms Security Commitment on Republic Day Amid Regional Tensions

[post-views]

Pakistan’s armed forces have reiterated their firm resolve to defend the country’s borders and ensure internal stability as the nation observes Pakistan Day on Monday. The day marks the historic passage of the Lahore Resolution in 1940, when Muslims of the subcontinent formally demanded a separate homeland.

The statement comes at a time of heightened tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan, following weeks of intense clashes from late February to mid-March. The conflict escalated after the Afghan Taliban launched attacks on Pakistani military positions, which Kabul described as retaliation for earlier Pakistani airstrikes. Islamabad, however, continues to accuse Afghanistan of sheltering militant groups involved in cross-border attacks—an allegation Kabul denies.

Amid the tensions, both sides agreed to a temporary ceasefire from March 18 to March 24 in view of Eid al-Fitr.

In its statement, the military’s media wing emphasized that Pakistan remains committed to safeguarding sovereignty, strengthening democratic institutions, and protecting citizens from terrorism and extremism. It stressed that the armed forces, along with law enforcement agencies and the public, are united in eliminating security threats.

Traditionally, Pakistan Day is marked by military parades and ceremonial gun salutes. However, this year’s celebrations were canceled due to government austerity measures linked to the ongoing Gulf oil crisis.
