Trump Criticism Sparks Concerns Over US Commitment to NATO

[post-views]

NATO, long a cornerstone of European security, is facing unprecedented stress as the US-Israeli conflict with Iran tests the alliance’s cohesion. Analysts warn the 76-year-old bloc risks its weakest state since its founding.

Former US President Donald Trump expressed frustration that European countries refused to deploy navies to secure the Strait of Hormuz after the February 28 air campaign against Iran, hinting at a potential US withdrawal from NATO. His recent criticisms have raised concerns in Europe that the US might not defend its allies in a crisis, regardless of formal commitments.

“This is the worst place NATO has been since it was founded,” said Max Bergmann of the Center for Strategic and International Studies. European officials are now preparing for the possibility of defending themselves without American support.

French General Francois Lecointre added that while NATO remains essential, Europe must consider a future without the US and question whether the organization’s current structure still serves its purpose.

A White House spokesperson said Trump’s disappointment with NATO allies has been made clear. NATO officials did not immediately comment.
