Chief of Defence Forces and Army Chief Field Marshal Asim Munir met Iranian parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf in Tehran on Monday during his visit to the Iranian capital, according to Iranian state broadcaster Press TV.
Munir and Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Tehran earlier in the day, Iranian media reported, after Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) described the visit as part of Pakistan’s ongoing efforts to promote regional peace and stability.
According to Press TV, Ghalibaf reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to upholding the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, while criticising the United States for failing to honour its own commitments, saying this had hindered regional stability and further eroded trust in Washington. Munir, for his part, said Pakistan would continue its efforts to help restore stability in the region.
Separately, Mohsen Rezaei, secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, expressed distrust of Washington during his own meeting with Munir, according to Fars news agency, saying America must change its behaviour and take practical steps toward implementing the terms of the agreement.
Iranian news agency ISNA also published photographs of a meeting between Munir and Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian. Earlier in the day, Munir and Naqvi had met with Iranian Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni in Tehran, according to Pakistani state media.
Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baqaei said the visit by Munir and Naqvi comes as bilateral ties between Islamabad and Tehran reach one of their strongest stages, according to state broadcaster IRIB.
