Major General Faisal Naseer has been appointed national coordinator of the National Counter Terrorism Authority (NACTA) for a three-year term on a secondment basis.
The Establishment Division issued a notification on Friday confirming the appointment, which was made with the approval of the federal government and takes effect immediately.
According to the notification, Major General Faisal Naseer, who serves as the Inter-Services Intelligence’s director general of counterintelligence, has been appointed under Section 9(1) of the NACTA Act, 2013. His three-year secondment will be governed by the standard terms and conditions applicable to such appointments.
The notification stated that the appointment would take effect immediately and remain in place for the stipulated period, subject to further government orders.
NACTA was established in 2008 under the Ministry of Interior to strengthen Pakistan’s institutional response to terrorism and extremism. Its responsibilities include developing national strategies and action plans to counter terrorism and violent extremism, coordinating their implementation among relevant institutions, and keeping the federal government informed about progress.
The authority also plays a coordinating role among federal and provincial institutions involved in counterterrorism efforts, providing a platform for developing a more integrated national response to security challenges.
NACTA was subsequently assigned an important role in the implementation of Pakistan’s 20-point National Action Plan, which was introduced as a comprehensive framework to combat terrorism and extremism across the country.
Major General Naseer’s appointment places him at the head of an institution responsible for coordinating some of Pakistan’s most significant counterterrorism and counter-extremism policies.
