Pakistan’s debate on reform usually revolves around corruption, weak institutions, political instability, civil-military imbalance and poor governance. These are serious problems. But beneath them lies a deeper crisis: an education system that does not consistently produce independent, critical and scientific minds. A society that teaches children to memorise answers rather than ask questions will struggle to create knowledge, innovation and effective institutions.
The problem is not simply inadequate schools, weak teacher training or limited research. It is also intellectual culture. Science advances by admitting what is not yet known, forming questions, testing evidence and revising conclusions. When students are taught to begin with predetermined answers and then search for confirmation, inquiry is replaced by justification and curiosity by certainty.
Pakistan needs clearer boundaries between different fields of knowledge. Religious education can have its proper place, but physics should be taught through physics, biology through biological evidence, history through historical inquiry and medicine through medical research. In every field, evidence and method must remain central.
Real reform must therefore begin in classrooms. Examinations should reward reasoning, analysis and problem-solving rather than memorisation. Teachers should be trained to encourage questions and tolerate disagreement. Science should move from textbooks to laboratories, while universities should be judged by the quality of research and knowledge they produce rather than by the number of degrees or papers they distribute.
This transformation will take a generation. But it is essential not only for science, but also for democracy. Citizens who learn to question evidence are better equipped to question power, reject propaganda and demand accountability.
Pakistan will move forward when its young people stop asking, “Where was this already written?” and begin asking, “What can we discover next?”
